Transforming Memories – Erinnerungen transformieren
Projection Mapping · Text
Europahaus, Lichtfest Leipzig
How does a society of the many remember? This project sought to broaden dominant historical narratives by integrating intersectional and (queer-)feminist perspectives. It examined forms of civic engagement before and after German reunification in 1989, emphasizing the role of emancipatory movements in democratization both within Germany and globally.
Presented as part of Lichtfest Leipzig—held each year on 9 October to commemorate the Monday Demonstrations of autumn 1989, which led to the SED regime's overthrow and the subsequent process of German reunification—the project featured a projection mapping on the Europahaus Leipzig. The mapping visualized these histories through quotes from witnesses, activists, and participants in past and present struggles. Supported by partners including Yılmaz-Günay Publishing, Verbrecher Verlag, and the Louise Otto-Peters Society e.V., the project connected historical moments of resistance with contemporary activist interventions, asking how collective memory can remain open, plural, and socially engaged.
